I found this book a fine read for the muggles who have never been. If you have been I would skip it unless you just want a refresher.
Nothing can compare to Seth Kubersky’s The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando 2017, so I won’t set up any unfair comparisons.
The Geek’s Guide to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando by Mary deSilva does tend to the twee, with its overly precious conceit that Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, magical creatures, wizards, and witches are real, but don’t let that put you off. (I almost did.) Yes, deSilva lays out descriptions of all of the rides, shops, and attractions in both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventures, Universal Studios Orlando’s two theme parks. (The Harry Potter strides both, all but requiring an additional expense so that tourists can flit from one theme park to the other in the same day.) But where she shines is when she gives details that Potter Heads will adore explaining that the gold statue in Hogwarts Castle is the architect of that school, pointing out a broken Enchanted Bench under the Whomping Willow (both on the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride), noting the connection between wand suitability and the Celtic Tree Calendar (Ollivander’s wand shop), and lots more. DeSilva also provides an excellent guide to the “spells” that Potter Heads can cast using a $50 interactive wand so that they can get their money’s worth.
For clueless Muggles, this book, which lacks touring plans, is probably not worth the price; however, for true Potter Heads, it’s definitely worth getting — especially as it’s free with Unlimited.
